The History

FOR 20 YEARS, MARK THORNTON SAFARIS HAS BEEN LEADING WALKING SAFARIS
THROUGHOUT  TANZANIA’S MOST REMOTE REGIONS.

IN 2008 WHEN SERENGETI National Park first allowed walking safaris in the roadless, wilderness zones of the park, a huge pristine area lay unexplored before us. Even the park rangers had never been in these areas, and until now, these areas are off limits to all entry except our mobile walking safaris. Imagine, a Serengeti all to yourself!

Since then Mark Thornton Safaris has spent countless days surveying new terrain and has led numerous mobile walking safaris ranging from 3-6 days. Then one night around the campfire in 2014, the idea was hatched: a full 10 day, 100 kilometer foot traverse of the entire Serengeti wilderness zones. Never before had this been done, so we set off to pioneer a route, replete with finding river crossing areas, perfect camp spots and a way to traverse the whole area.

In 2015 we led the first-ever Traverse and since then we lead a few each year for private groups who want the ultimate in African walking safaris and the deepest of Serengeti experiences.

I know I’ll never forget that I walked the Serengeti; I regard it as part of my identity.

GOING BACK IN TIME

What made this trip special was the combination of three factors: excellent game viewing, rustic yet luxurious accommodations, and a feeling of remoteness. We are rapidly approaching Mark to begin working on our 7th trip to Africa!
